Dave Harrison – Greenhouse Canada. – ProSelect Gas Treating Inc. officially unveiled the world’s first carbon capture system for the greenhouse industry today at a launch event for the GC6 held at the SunSelect Produce greenhouses in Delta.

The GC6 Carbon Capture System is a revolutionary new technology that’s transforming the future of carbon capture with its ability to harness carbon dioxide (CO2) from biomass combustion emissions and convert it into fertilizer to grow climate-friendly greenhouse crops.

With the launch of this $5 million Canadian-made innovation, greenhouse growers now have access to the cleanest, most sustainable and cost-effective solution for greenhouse operations on the planet.

The state-of-the-art clean energy system allows growers to take advantage of vast resources of renewable and inexpensive biomass sources like wood waste to not only heat their greenhouses, but also deliver essential CO2 fertilizer to their crops. The unique technology is a highly sustainable, all-in-one solution that can greatly reduce their fuel and energy costs.

“Never before has there been a technology that can benefit the environment and the bottom line for greenhouse operators like the GC6 Carbon Capture System can,” said Victor Krahn, CEO and co-founder of ProSelect Gas Treating Inc.

“Our goal is to help reduce our industry’s dependence on non-renewable fossil fuels while creating a sustainable legacy that supports locally grown food.”

The GC6 intercepts CO2 contained in biomass from entering the atmosphere and contributing to global warming.

CAPTURING CARBON DIOXIDE
The innovative technology combusts biomass and captures carbon dioxide at a rate of five tons per hour. Then, as an alternative to typical sequestration methods such as burying CO2 beneath the earth’s crust, the GC6 system strips pure carbon dioxide and delivers it directly to growing greenhouse fruits and vegetables as a natural fertilizer.

The carbon cycle is then completed as we eat our way to a carbon negative future, having transformed the renewable, regenerative, naturally occurring carbon from wood waste into food.

Using biomass to heat greenhouses has become increasingly popular due to its sustainable and economical nature. Costs for biomass are minimal and often only involve local delivery fees.

Until now, though, operators had to rely on non-renewable sources like natural gas and liquid CO2 for fertilizing their crops. The GC6 is the only system that can convert captured carbon dioxide into pure, food grade CO2 fertilizer using a unique patented organic solvent.

A key advantage for growers who make the switch to the GC6 or retrofit their systems with it, is the significant reduction in fuel and energy costs, which can add up to as much as 50 per cent. In British Columbia, growers have the additional benefit of being exempt from the B.C. carbon tax that applies exclusively to the purchase of fossil fuels and not biomass.

Further financial benefits include savings on chemicals and disposal fees; access to green government grants to help compensate for purchase costs; and revenue created from developing, trading and selling carbon credits through programs like Offsetters, a leading Canadian provider of carbon management solutions.

“ProSelect has taken a very strong leadership position by developing the GC6 which has the potential to significantly reduce the industry’s dependence on fossil fuels and the resulting impacts on climate change,” said Dr. James Tansey, CEO of Offsetters. “We hope that local governments will provide incentives for growers to make the switch to the GC6 to achieve a negative carbon footprint, one greenhouse at a time.”

Support from the industry and government for this clean energy innovation was demonstrated at today’s launch event attended by the greenhouse industry, stakeholders and government officials. VIPs included the Pat Bell, B.C.’s minister of Jobs, Tourism and Innovation; Vicki Huntington, MLA for Delta South; Paul Austin, regional director of Sustainable Development Technology Canada; and James Mack, head of the B.C.’s Climate Action Secretariat.

Many industry representatives were also in attendance, including those from the B.C. Greenhouse Growers Association and the B.C. Vegetable Marketing Commission.

Partial funding for the GC6 Carbon Capture System pilot project was provided by the Government of British Columbia’s Innovative Clean Energy Fund ($2.24 million) and the Government of Canada through Sustainable Development Technology Canada’s SD Tech Fund ($1 million).

ProSelect’s strategic partners are Vyncke, suppliers of the GC6 biomass boilers; Koch Glitsch, a leading global engineering firm which provided the integral internal packing materials; Procede BV, a leading Dutch engineering firm specializing in innovative green technologies; and SunSelect Produce, a B.C.-based greenhouse company with more than 25 years of industry experience.

Vancouver Sun – A B.C. greenhouse grower and a Dutch energy company have developed a new carbon-capture-and-storage technology that relies on the natural need of plants for carbon dioxide to transform carbon contained in biomass into food.

SunSelect Produce Inc. and Procede BV say their carbon-capture-and-storage system is the first commercial operation of its kind in the world to convert the carbon in biomass into fertilizer for food.

The technology is designed to heat greenhouse operations with low-cost biomass, filter emissions, capture the carbon dioxide and feed it to the growing plants as a natural air-borne fertilize, said Victor Krahn, chief executive officer of the joint-venture company, ProSelect Gas Treating. SunSelect Produce unveiled the technology Friday at its 17-hectare Delta greenhouse complex.

“We are taking the carbon and instead of letting it go into the atmosphere, we are converting it to food and eating it,” Krahn said.

“We are eating our way to a carbon-negative future.”

Plants need carbon dioxide, light and heat to grow and the more CO2 they can absorb, the more productive they are, Krahn said.

The technology uses a patented organic liquid to remove the C02 from the exhaust gas stream of the greenhouse biomass burner.

The liquid is then heated, releasing the pure CO2 into the greenhouse for the plants to use.

Krahn said SunSelect’s Delta greenhouse is the first one in the world to have an operating carbon-capture-and-storage system. It removes five tonnes of carbon an hour from the facility’s biomass burner and recycles it for the carbon-hungry peppers SunSelect grows.

“The system is viable. We feel fantastic about it,” Krahn said.

The innovative carbon-capture-and-storage system cost $5 million to develop. The joint venture partners received $2.24 million from the British Columbia Innovative Clean Energy Fund and $1.72 million from Sustainable Development Technology Canada.

Krahn said SunSelect switched from natural gas to biomass as a source of heat for its greenhouse several years ago when natural gas prices spiked.

A critical element in the success of the program is that by using biomass, which is considered a renewable energy source, to replace natural gas, a fossil fuel, SunSelect is able to sell its carbon credits through Offsetters, a B.C. organization that certifies greenhouse gas emission reductions by businesses, and buys and sells the resulting credits on B.C.’s carbon market.

“That offsets 10 per cent of the capital costs of the equipment,” Krahn said. “And that’s revenue that comes in every year.”

Linda Delli Santi, executive director of the B.C. Greenhouse Growers Association, said the industry is always looking for innovative technologies that can help it compete against growers in jurisdictions that are not faced with high heating costs.

She said carbon dioxide contained in emissions from natural gas is now being recycled into plants by the B.C. greenhouse sector. A cost-effective system of removing carbon dioxide from biomass could lead to a decreased use of natural gas as a heating fuel in greenhouses, she added.

B.C.’s vegetable greenhouse growers employ about 3,800 people and grossed $245 million in 2011. About 90 per cent of the province’s greenhouse acreage is in the Lower Mainland.

Vancouver/CKNW (AM980) - It is a made-in-BC first, as a local company has created a way for greenhouse fertilizer to be created using carbon capture technology.

Co-founder Victor Krahn says they burn wood used to heat greenhouses, and then funnel gases from sequestered carbon through water-based solvent.

“So then the gas continues to the atmosphere without any CO2 in it at all so it is a completely clean form of emission and then that solvent now we can boil off again and use the CO2 in the greenhouse.”

He says the CO2 then becomes fertilizer that is 100% food safe and used to grow fruits and vegetables.

The process is cost effective and CO2 fertilizer is already in demand in the greenhouse industry.

BC’s Jobs Minister is hailing the new carbon capture technology for greenhouses and says it may mean new jobs for the province.

Pat Bell says he expects the technology to be commercialized and he hopes the production stays local.

“This is absolutely leading edge technology it is the first one in the world where carbon dioxide is removed from wood waste wood heat and it is used to fertilize the vegetables in the greenhouse. World leading right here in British Columbia.”

He says units could sell around the world.

Bell says the province chipped in about half the cost, just over two million dollars, through the innovative clean energy fund.

ProSelect’s GC6 Carbon Capture System Converts Biomass into CO2 Fertilizer to Grow Climate Friendly Fruits and Vegetables

April 20, 2012 (Delta, British Columbia) – ProSelect Gas Treating Inc. officially unveiled the world’s first carbon capture system for the greenhouse industry today at a launch event for the GC6 held at the SunSelect Produce greenhouses in Delta, British Columbia. The GC6 Carbon Capture System is a revolutionary new technology that’s transforming the future of carbon capture with its ability to harness carbon dioxide (CO2 ) from biomass combustion emissions and convert it into fertilizer to grow climate friendly greenhouse crops.

The carbon cycle is then completed as we eat our way to a carbon negative future, having transformed the renewable, regenerative, naturally occurring carbon from wood waste into food.

Using biomass to heat greenhouses has become increasingly popular due to it’s sustainable and economical nature. Costs for biomass are minimal and often only involve local delivery fees. Until now though, operators had to rely on non-renewable sources like natural gas and liquid CO2 for fertilizing their crops. The GC6 is the only system that can convert captured carbon dioxide into pure, food grade CO2 fertilizer using a unique patented organic solvent.

A key advantage for growers who make the switch to the GC6 or retrofit their systems with it, is the significant reduction in fuel and energy costs, which can add up to as much as 50 percent. In British Columbia, growers have the additional benefit of being exempt from the B.C. carbon tax which applies exclusively to the purchase of fossil fuels and not biomass.

VIPs included the Honourable Pat Bell, B.C.‘s Minister of Jobs, Tourism and Innovation; Vicki Huntington, MLA for Delta South; Paul Austin, Regional Director of Sustainable Development Technology Canada; and James Mack, Head of the B.C.‘s Climate Action Secretariat. Many industry representatives were also in attendance, including those from the B.C. Greenhouse Growers Association and the B.C. Vegetable Marketing Commission. The event involved a ribbon cutting, facility tours and presentations from the Honourable Pat Bell, B.C.’s Minister of Jobs, Tourism and Innovation; ProSelect Director, Reinhold Krahn; ProSelect CEO and Co-Founder, Victor Krahn; and Offsetters CEO, Dr. James Tansey.
